International Compost Awareness Week 2009 Poster Contest

Call for Entries: The International Compost Awareness Week Committee of the US Composting Council invites YOU to get involved in ICAW 2009. We’re looking for anyone interested in participating in our 2nd Annual Poster Contest. The winning poster will be used to promote our 14th Annual International Compost Awareness Week – May 3 – May 9, 2009.

The competition is open to everyone and anyone who wants to help the USCC celebrate composting and promote the benefits of composting and compost for effective resource management, soil health and plant growth. We invite municipal, facility, or state agency representatives to join in the fun -- students (grade school, middle school, high school, college), homeowners, commercial composters, green industry businesses, youth groups, everyone! Whether or not you have celebrated or been involved in ICAW in the past, we want you to participate this year.

It’s easy! Here’s the format:

The winning “poster artist” will have his/her name posted on the USCC website and will be included on all print material and featured in any press coverage that the USCC releases in association with our 14th Annual ICAW Celebration.

The contest begins on December 5, 2008 and continues until January 30, 2009. The finalists will be announced on the US Composting Council Web site with online voting available. The competition will be held in 2 stages and will be judged on the following criteria (40 points maximum):

Poster Judging Criteria

• Marketability of poster to multiple audiences -- 10 points.
• Creative and original artwork and idea -- 10 points
• Attractiveness in terms of design and neatness of layout --- 10 points
• Overall Impact, all graphics are related to the topic and make it easier to understand the poster theme – 10 points

Poster Contest Timeline

Stage 1 -- All submissions received by January 30, 2009 will be judged by the ICAW Committee and based on the criteria above. In the event of a tie the criteria of “creative and original artwork and idea” will be used to determine the winner.

Stage 2 -- The top 15 finalists (3 in each category) will be announced on the USCC Web site and voting will take place in early February. In the event of a tie the major sponsor of ICAW and the committee co-chairs will determine the winning poster.

This is YOUR opportunity to display your creative talent and show your belief in the composting industry and in the benefits of using compost!

Poster Winner

The Poster Contest Winner will have his/her poster reproduced and distributed nationwide as the official 2009 International Compost Awareness Week poster and featured on the US Composting Council Web site. The successful poster winner will receive a $500 cash prize. Each student division winner (based on the same criteria noted above) – grade school, middle school, high school and college – will each receive $100 in special recognition. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Fee: Free! Entries are limited to ONE submission per person/group -- pick your best idea and go for it! You must complete the entry form application* and checklist*, and submit your poster to: uscc@compostingcouncil.org with “Poster Contest” noted in the subject line.

Posters: should be graphically attractive and use our dynamic ICAW campaign message Compost! … Recycling the Way Nature Meant It To Be” The concept and images of the poster should be based on “compost use” or address the “benefits of recycling organic waste material.” We will especially look for images that demonstrate that compost is not limited to a specific use, but has many uses. Compost is used for both commercial and residential applications and in a variety of industries such as landscape, nursery, agricultural and horticultural. For example, in vegetable and flower gardens … for tree and shrub planting … for sod production and roadside projects … in wetlands creation, soil remediation and land reclamation … sports fields and golf courses and for sediment and erosion control.

Submissions: Each entry must be emailed with a completed application. Include the artist's name (additionally, if representing an organization, association, state agency, etc.), address, phone number and valid e-mail address. A short paragraph on why you chose to participate in ICAW 2009 and explanation of your poster concept MUST be included with your email submission.

• Only original artwork will be considered.

• Posters that include personal or corporate information or product endorsements will be disqualified.

• Copyrighted Images/Subjects: Copyrighted, trademarked products, packaging, brand names and advertisements may not be used within the poster. Original signed release forms are required for persons, whether public or private citizens who are photographed and appear on the poster. Release forms can be as simple as a paragraph stating “permission” from “subjects” with a list of names of the individuals appearing. This rule will be strictly enforced.

• Electronic Submission Only: Artwork is to be submitted in electronic format with a resolution of 150 dpi and in jpg format. (Note: Poster Winner will be requested to resubmit poster at higher resolution for reproduction purposes.) Poster should measure no larger than 13” wide X 19” high. The poster must include the words International Compost Awareness Week 2009 – May 3 – 9, 2009 along with the poster theme – Compost! … Recycling the Way Nature Meant It To Be”

Creative:

• The US Composting Council ICAW Committee reserves the right to alter the final poster design or to reject all submissions for the final poster design.

• When creating your poster, please remember that the winning poster will be reproduced and distributed nationally. The US Composting Council logo along with sponsor logos will be added to the poster.

• All submissions become the property of the US Composting Council and may be used for commercial purposes. No entries will be returned.
